Coming home from a lovely night out in London (Mon Plaisir....wonderful traditional French restaurant I first went to with my parents maybe 30 years ago, still does great onion soup) last week, we jumped in a taxi which had a video screen and and remote controls on either side. For the record it had a variety of content, including BBC Comedy - which we chose. Little Britain was a good as ever. 25 minutes later we were home.

Then we both realised that we hadn't talked - which we normally do voraciously in the back of cabs, or looked at the teeming streets and squares of Westminster, so incandescent at 10.30 on a September night. We just watched sketches we'd seen before.

Also - you can't turn it off.

Stupid really.

i find the perversive pervasiveness of tv to be a huge distraction. tvs are everywhere in public spaces - hospital waiting rooms, transportation terminals, taxis, busses, planes - basically anywhere we have a few moments (or more) to sit.

firstly, the tv will likely have a channel that is not appropriate for all viewers, such as children. in this case, someone else has decided what is appropriate to broadcast in a public space - really, who want to view gory picture from cnn when waiting with children at the pediatricians.

secondly, what you discovered, we humans are hardwired to pay attention to moving images. it is amazingly hard for any human to _not_ look at a tv. this is worse if the screen is in your face on the back of the seat in front of you. my first experience of a tv in a taxi was extremely annoying.

thirdly, even if you manage to shield yourself from the images, the audio is still blaring. so much for a calm and quiet wait.

fourthly, you can't turn it off! my wife and i have what some tv-supportes consider anti-social behaviour (by order of 'disruptiveness') - if we can turn off the sound, we do; if we can change the channel, we do; if we can turn off the tv, we do.

dude, the ubiquity of tvs in public spaces is sad, quite sad. the damage it has to public peace and public conversation is well expemplified by your own experience.
